Red blood cells give blood its red colour and carry oxygen. When the red blood cells lose their oxygen they turn a dull red colour that appears to be blue. Anaemia is caused by a lack of sufficient red blood cells.
White blood cells help to fight bacterial / viral infections. These cells are round and spikey and can
be seen as the head of a pimple or the white of acne. The cancer – Leukaemia is a deficiency of
white blood cells.
Platelets make scabs! These are tiny, irregular shaped, flat particles which play a very important
role in the clotting of blood. When the skin is cut platelets go to the site of the wound and stick
together healing the cut. This results in a scab. Haemophilia is a condition in which a patient has
insufficient platelets and is at risk of bleeding to death internally or from just a tiny cut to the skin.
